Holiday Science Camps


Introducing the Virginia Air & Space Center’s new winter science camps!
We are now offering science camps December through February!

Two-day Camps– Grades K-3 and 4 - 7
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. – $75 non-members/$70 members

Chilly Willy I
Grades K-3 - Monday & Tuesday, December 22-23

December 21st marks the first day of winter and there is definitely a chill in the air with this hands-on science camp devoted to all things icy and cold! Explore the science behind snowflakes and create your own paper snowflakes to take home. Construct a snow globe and make ice cream using liquid nitrogen. Tackle some physics principles, with the hands-on exhibit Zing! Register Online!

Lights, Camera, Action - Making Movies
Grades 4-7 – Monday & Tuesday, December 22-23

Become a director, set designer, writer and clay-mation artist with this new, exciting camp that introduces you to the art of creating stop-motion animated films! Experience the world of stop-motion animation with the new IMAX film The Light Before Christmas! Make animated flip books and develop story boards. Work in a team to create backdrops, characters, and props. Use digital cameras and computer software to shoot and produce your own stop-motion animated movie. Have a popcorn party to watch your movie premiere and take a copy of your finished movie home on a DVD to share with family and friends. Register Online!

Chilly Willy II
Grades K-3 - Monday & Tuesday, December 29-30

Chill out with even more fun on the ice! Build an igloo using sugar cubes and make ice cream with liquid nitrogen. Explore science that spins, bounces, and flies with the hands-on exhibit Zing! Become an ice engineer when you design and build structures that can withstand a snowball fight, and test your creations! Register Online!

Styrofoam Safari

Grades K-3 – Saturday, January 10

Learn about the uses of Styrofoam and the need to recycle. Make a snowman that won’t melt and other creatures out of Styrofoam! Perform Hot Ice experiments and watch Styrofoam vanish before your eyes. Create building blocks out of Styrofoam trays to construct Styrofoam structures. Register Online!

Robot Mission: LEGO® Mindstorms®
Grades 4-7 – Saturday, January 10

Investigate the history of robotics and how we use robots to explore space, including on-going Mars missions. Experiment with Mars Rovers to complete tasks on the Red Planet’s surface. Use LEGO® Mindstorms® to navigate an obstacle course that you and your team create. Register Online!

Go Green - Junior!
Grades K-3 – Saturday, January 24

Join the Go Green Brigade when you learn what you can do to help the planet and be kind to Mother Earth! Take a heart-pounding adventure through the Grand Canyon with a team of water conservationists on a mission to restore the Colorado River with the 3D IMAX film Grand Canyon Adventure! Make edible soil and become a hydrogeologist. Save the Earth in the Recycle Relay Race. Create your own toys out of recycled items and make a lava lamp out of a bottle! Register Online!

Go Green!
Grades 4-7 – Saturday, January 24

Who said it’s not easy being green? Learn what you can do to help the planet and be kind to Mother Earth! Take a heart-pounding adventure through the Grand Canyon with a team of water conservationists on a mission to restore the Colorado River with the 3D IMAX film Grand Canyon Adventure! To the Moon!
Grades K-3 – Saturday, February 7


Create a space helmet and astronaut airpack for your lunar adventure. Build a shoebox shuttle to take you to the moon. Play moon volleyball and train to work in space like an astronaut. Make your own astronaut meal and lunar rock candy. Construct a moonlight catcher and make “moon prints.” Register Online!

Mission Control
Grades 4-7 – Saturday, February 7

Join Mission Control when you perform a simulated shuttle mission! Create a mission patch, explore the past, present and future of space exploration and learn the difference between a rocket and a plane. Experiment with different types of rockets and build your own shuttle glider. Register Online!

 

Egg-straordinary Inventions-Junior!
Grades K-3 – Saturday, February 21

Become an eggstraordinary inventor when you put your creativity and (egg cartons) to the test! Use foam egg cartons to build a protection pod for an astronaut landing and construct critters and creepy crawlers. Learn how to fold different types of planes using paper and create egg carton art! Make ice cream using liquid nitrogen for a cool treat and experience an IMAX film in the giant-screen IMAX theater. Register Online!

Egg-straordinary Inventions!
Grades 4-7 – Saturday, February 21

Challenge your brain and make some eggstraordinary inventions! Create egg carton models for Mars colonization and travel to Mars in the exhibit Space Quest! Protect your egg-stronaut for a moon landing using limited materials. Test your creation when you compete in an egg drop contest! Make ice cream using liquid nitrogen for a cool treat and experience an IMAX film in the giant-screen IMAX theater.Register Online!
